Bijdrage verzoekschriftencommissie over het burgerinitiatief 'End Ecocide'

26 februari 2015

Anja Hazekamp (PvdD): Thank you chair. First of all I would like to thank the people fighting for this End Ecocide initiative. It is really important to keep pushing for legislation on this point. And I strongly want to support the call for action from all MEPs, mentioned by Keith Taylor.

I would like to add another committee to which we could send this initiative. Not only to ENVI, and to LIBE, but also to the Agriculture and Fisheries committees. Because the agricultural and fisheries policies of the European Union have a devastating effect on ecosystems all over the world, not just in Europe. They are responsible for a lot of ecocide itself.

I have a question for the European Commission: when there are conflicts of interest between European policies and European laws, how will they deal with this? When on the one hand, the European agricultural policy is only focused on growth and more growth, how can the Commission on the other hand say that we have to protect our ecosystems? Thank you.

Cecilia Wikström: [...] One way forward would be that we take note of this and that we also follow the advice of colleague Hazekamp and alert ENVI, AGRI and PECH on this, to make sure they are also involved in any kind of follow-up on this item. Can I do that? I take your silence as approval. Thank you.
