Bijdrage milieucommissie tijdens een gedachtewisseling met Eurocommissaris Virginijus Sinkevičius over de uitkomst van de Biodiversiteitstop COP15

Anja Hazekamp (PvdD): Thank you Chair, and welcome Commissioner.

The biodiversity crisis is taking frightening forms. It is good that a deal was struck at the COP in Montreal, but we had all hoped for even more. For instance, it is incredibly frustrating that again no legally binding targets are agreed. It is of paramount importance that the EU steps up his own efforts and to stop our own - unfortunately very high - share in biodiversity loss. Reducing our own environmental footprint is crucial to save our planet.

Can Commissioner Sinkevicius confirm that a big part of the answer can be found on our dinner plate - that reducing the production and consumption of animal protein means a world of change. What will the Commissioner do to ensure that the instruments at the EU's disposal, such as the common agriculture policy, the common fisheries policy, promotional subsidies and for instance the school milk programs will stop promoting animal products, and instead start to promote plant-based diets?

Thank you.
